When Sri Shankara invoked Goddess Saraswathi to reside at Sringeri as Goddess Sharadamba, She readily obliged. The great Acharya had an image of Hers carved in sandalwood and installed there for the worship of devotees. Finding the image disfigured due to Abhishekha and Puja offered for centuries, Jagadguru Sri Vidyaranya, the 12th Acharya of the Peetam replaced the sandal image with the present golden image. The Acharya also had a solid temple structure with a tiled roof and bamboo walls constructed for her. During His time, emperors and the affluent offered to the Goddess an amazing wealth of fine ornaments made of gold, diamonds and many priceless gems. The 33rd Jagadguru Sri Sacchidananda Shivabhinava Nrisimha Bharathi Mahaswamiji replaced the bamboo walls with polished granite slabs. Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Mahaswamiji brought about further improvements to the temple. The present Jagadguru Sri Bharathi Theertha Mahaswamiji has given a sharp face-lift to the shrine by replacing the previous silver doors to Her sanctum sanctorum with golden doors. He has also had a golden chariot made for Sri Sharada. The Navaranga Maha Mandapa in front of Ambal’s shrine has exquisite carvings on its pillars. Words fail whenever an attempt is made to describe the beauty of the Goddess!
